Understanding Career Foreign Fighters

Colin P. Clarke, Senior Research Fellow, moderated a virtual panel on “Understanding Career Foreign Fighters.” Taking place on May 26, 2020, the virtual event was hosted by the United States Institute of Peace (USIP). Other panelists included Leanne Erdberg Steadman, Director of VE at USIP and Interim Executive Director of the RESOLVE Network; Chelsea Daymon, Associate Fellow for the Global Network on Extremism & Technology; Jeanine de Roy van Zuijdewijn, Researcher at the Institute of Security and Global Affairs at Leiden University, and Research Fellow at the International Centre for Counter-Terrorism at The Hague; and David Malet, Associate Professor of Public Affairs at American University. The event followed up on a recent RESOLVE Network Research Report, “Career Foreign Fighters: Expertise Transmission Across Insurgencies,” explaining the findings and sharing insights on the unique challenges that career foreign fighters pose.
