Regional Dialogue on Preventing Violent Extremism in Southeast Asia

On November 28, 2023, TSC Senior Research Fellow Susan Sim participated in the Regional Dialogue on Preventing Violent Extremism in Southeast Asia. Held in Penang, Malaysia, the event was hosted by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in partnership with the European Union, the UN Office of Counter-Terrorism and the UN Development Programme. The event discussed the threat of terrorist actors weaponizing new and emerging technologies, and Ms. Sim presented on how technology is evolving at a faster pace than regulatory frameworks are able to keep pace with. She concluded by noting that states need to collaborate with both scientists and counter-terrorism practitioners to develop strategies to prevent the use of new technologies by violent actors.
