How The Weaponization of Information Threatens Democracies
The Soufan Center hosted a discussion on the global state of disinformation and its impact on democracies around the world. Panelists examined the tactics of disinformation used by state and non-state actors alike: from rogue conspiracy theorists to state-sponsored elements in Iran, Saudi Arabia, Russia, China, and beyond. They also discussed how false and misleading information spread in the digital space can lead to physical threats in the real world.
The webinar, hosted by Emerita Torres, Director of Policy Research and Programs at The Soufan Center, featured three panelists:
- Dexter Filkins, Staff Writer at The New Yorker
- Dina Hussein, Counterterrorism and Dangerous Organizations Policy Manager for Europe, Middle East, and Africa at Facebook
- Bret Schafer, Media and Disinformation Fellow at Alliance for Securing Democracy
