TSG IntelBrief: Iraq: The Forgotten War

.

Although the news is dominated by the chaos washing across North Africa and the broader Middle East, it is worth remembering that there are still nearly 50,000 US troops in Iraq who are waiting for the end of the year when they can rotate Stateside.

However, we are seeing clear signs from both Secretary of Defence Robert Gates and Vice President Joe Biden that this rotation might not be a foregone conclusion.

A number of events have taken place over the past few days that make us think that it may be precipitate to expect all the US troops to be home in time for Christmas.

We believe that there is the very real possibility that elements of the US forces may remain in Iraq for longer than might have been expected or announced.

That will make the region even more complex than it already is, and continue to involve the US military in the dangerous labyrinth of Middle East oil, politics and extremism.
