The Disbanding of Jemaah Islamiyah: Causes, Ideological Revisions, and Prospects for the Future

On May 14, 2025, Senior Research Fellow Julie Chernov Hwang joined an online event on the ‘Disbanding of Jemaah Islamiyah’ hosted by the AVERT Research Network. In June 2024, Jemaah Islamiyah formally disbanded, choosing to dissolve in order to safeguard the community that sustained it. During this presentation, Dr. Chernov Hwang examined the strategic decision-making and ideological shifts that informed this choice and assessed the potential future directions for the community.
