Securing the Future Initiative Virtual Roundtable – The UN Security Council: Assessing Twenty Years of Counterterrorism

On December 15, 2021, The Soufan Center was proud to support a Securing the Future Initiative (SFI) virtual roundtable on “The UN Security Council: Assessing Twenty Years of Counterterrorism.” The session brought together key civil society stakeholders to identify areas of impact as well as successes and challenges in UN Security Council efforts to address terrorist and violent extremist threats over the past two decades. The discussion was led by Naureen Chowdhury Fink, Executive Director of The Soufan Center; Alistair Millar, President of the Fourth Freedom Forum; and Eric Rosand, Visiting Senior Fellow of The Soufan Center.

The participants’ contributions will help inform the SFI project’s ongoing research as it looks to develop policy-relevant recommendations aimed at ensuring an effective and sustainable UN Security Council approach to counterterrorism challenges going forward. These recommendations, which will be informed by a series of workshops and consultation with a variety of stakeholders over the next few months, will be presented in September 2022 at the United Nations in New York.
