Securing the Future Initiative Inaugural Workshop – The UN Security Council: Assessing Twenty Years of Counterterrorism

From November 30 to December 2, 2021, The Soufan Center was proud to support the inaugural workshop of the Securing the Future Initiative (SFI) on “The UN Security Council: Assessing Twenty Years of Counterterrorism” at the Greentree Foundation in Manhasset, New York. The three day retreat brought together key stakeholders, including Member States, UN officials, independent experts, and civil society, for a timely discussion on the UN Security Council’s role and impact in countering terrorism and violent extremism over the past twenty years. The workshop was led by Naureen Chowdhury Fink, Executive Director of The Soufan Center; Alistair Millar, President of the Fourth Freedom Forum; and Eric Rosand, Visiting Senior Fellow of The Soufan Center.

Through the interactive sessions, participants identified and discussed the varous impact of the UN Security Council counterterrorism initiatives on policies and initiatives on the ground and reflected on the implications for its future role and scope of work. These discussions took into account the evolution of both the threats and the multilateral architecture since September 11, 2001, and key issues identified will inform the analysis and  policy-relevant recommendations and findings to be delivered by SFI in Fall 2022.
