On April 23, 2024, TSC Senior Research Fellow Wassim Nasr joined a discussion ‘Jihadist Militancy in the Sahel: State of the Art and Prospective Scenarios’ hosted by the George Washington University Program on Extremism. The event set out to examine the situation of jihadist groups in the Sahel twelve years after militants took control of northern Mali. The discussion explored the state of the art among jihadist organizations in the Sahel, explanations for why they have substantially grown in size, range of action, capabilities and impact, and offered assessments of the different plausible scenarios in the region for the future.
