  • On July 27, Bahrain executed three men, two of whom were Shia activists convicted of terrorism charges and murder.
  • The trial of Ali al-Arab and Ahmed al-Malali has been condemned by human rights experts as a travesty, with allegations of torture and forced confessions.
  • Bahrain’s Sunni-led government has cracked down on Shia dissent since widespread street protests in 2011 and often accuses Iran of working to foster local dissent.
  • The U.S. did not attempt to stop the controversial executions by Bahrain, home to a strategic American naval base.
