20 Years After 9/11: Achievements and Challenges of EU Counter-Terrorism Efforts

On July 8, our Founder Ali Soufan offered remarks at an event hosted by the European Council, titled “20 Years After 9/11: Achievements and Challenges of EU Counter-Terrorism Efforts.” The event featured discussions between EU Counter-Terrorism Coordinator Gilles de Kerchove and subject matter experts and focused on lessons learned since 9/11; the evolution of terrorism; and the external dimension of violent extremism. In his remarks, Mr. Soufan emphasized the importance of international collaboration against terrorism to counter the escalating violent far-right extremist threat and growth of al-Qaeda and Islamic State affiliates globally. He also underpinned the importance of states pursuing “coordinated global counterterrorism efforts, respective whole-of-government responses, and human rights-driven foreign policy agendas.”
